In my latest for the Guardian, I find that the pundits, regardless of how they think John McCain did on substance in his third and final debate with Barack Obama, hurt himself big-time with his petulant, angry performance.

I'd LIKE McCain to get angry. He should call a spade a spade (absolutely no racism intended), especially in defense of that fine lady, Sarah Palin. Us "regular" guys love her.
Defend the indefensible? Sure, I'd love to see him devote all his attention to making a silk purse out of a sow's ear, absolutely no sexism intended.

There is no accounting for personal taste. However, I do find the objectification of Palin highly amusing.
Well Don, I guess that can be taken as proof that McCain's Metamucil is working.
But what's clear is that most of the American population finds her scary and/or obnoxious. A -20 net favorability is below that of prunes for breakfast.

Neither Joe nor plumber
Turns out that “Joe the Plumber,” as he became nationally known when Senator John McCain made him a theme at Wednesday night’s third and final presidential debate, may run a plumbing business but he is not a licensed plumber. His full name is Samuel J. Wurzelbacher. And he owes a bit in back taxes.
The premise of his question to Mr. Obama about taxes may also be flawed, according to tax analysts.
DK - please advise - what percentage of the actual voting electorate are employed as pundits? Is this the new 'swing state', or are they merely a Greek chorus, who will be surprised when they are proven wrong once again?
The news stories about Obama's giant planned victory party on Election Night evoke for me the memory of a giant platform in Copley Square, where the band played on and on, but which was mysteriously never graced with a candidate,,,,
What put me off was the sneering quality to McCain's delivery of many of his attacks, which seemed more ill-intentioned than "petulant" connotes to me.

Well, gee, I cover the media, you know? Can I keep doing that, or should I switch immediately to seeking out the wisdom of Joe Six-Pack and Joe the Plumber?
Actually, if you assume that the snap post-debate polls have been accurate, I'd say that the pundits have been kinder to McCain than the public has.
One amusing side show has been watching the pundits hang back cautiously until the poll results have come in. Only then have they felt free to unload on McCain.
I know Obama is not allowed to throw heavy punches, but to be cautioned about a smile lest it be seen as a smirk? Give me a break.
